His grades in high school weren’t very high, so he had to spend his first 2 years in the College of Basic Studies. By 1974, he got into the School of Public Communications at the university. Later, in July 1975, he attended the Radio Engineering Institute of Electronics in Fredericksburg, Virginia. There, he earned a top-notch radio-telephone operator license, which all radio broadcasters needed at that time. This license was given by the Federal Communications Commission.

In May 1976, Stern graduated with high honors, achieving a 3.8 grade point average. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in broadcasting and film, with a minor in English and speech. Additionally, he has established a scholarship at the university.

As a child, Stern delved into piano lessons for five years and developed a fascination with marionettes, crafting explicit shows to entertain his friends. However, after a challenging LSD trip, he decided to stop using drugs altogether.

Armed with his 1st-class radio-telephone operator license, Stern secured his initial professional radio position at WNTN in Newton, Massachusetts. From August to December 1975, he handled air shifts, delivered news, and worked on production tasks. Following this stint, for the subsequent five months, he instructed students in basic electronics to help them prepare for their FCC exams.
