During his stint at the University of California, Gonzalez played football for the California Golden Bears team. He was coached by future NFL coach Steve Mariucci. Gonzalez earned All-Pac-10 and All-America honors. He also played basketball for Cal. In his junior year, he played 28 games, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. California reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA basketball tournament that year. Gonzalez eventually had to choose between basketball and football. Transitioning between the two sports was tough.
