In his final year of high school, he gained 945 yards, caught 62 passes, and scored 13 touchdowns. He earned 1st-team All-America honors for both tight end and linebacker positions. He also played basketball and was named MVP for Orange County and Sunset League, scoring an average of 26 points per game. After high school, he was named Orange County High School Athlete of the Year, sharing the title with golfer Tiger Woods.

During his stint at the University of California, Gonzalez played football for the California Golden Bears team. He was coached by future NFL coach Steve Mariucci. Gonzalez earned All-Pac-10 and All-America honors. He also played basketball for Cal. In his junior year, he played 28 games, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. California reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA basketball tournament that year. Gonzalez eventually had to choose between basketball and football. Transitioning between the two sports was tough.
