Mark Searles Career

Searles serves at NBC 10 as the Chief Meteorologist. He forecasts the weather on NBC 10 News at 5, 5:30, 6, 7, and 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. In the early 1990s, Mark began forecasting as an intern alongside former NBC 10 meteorologist John Ghiorse. Before returning to Providence to work alongside Ghiorse, he worked at WVNY-TV, an ABC station in Burlington, Vt., where he covered numerous major New England storms.

Mark began his education in aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. After his sophomore year, though, he did an internship with John in the meteorology department, which changed everything. Mark changed his major to atmospheric science and physical geography and received his diploma in 1994. Mark’s weather casting has earned him the AMS Broadcast Seal of Approval and multiple Boston/New England Emmy nominations. He received the Best of Rhode Island Award for Television Meteorology in 2012.

Mark enjoys giving talks to groups about the wonders of weather, particularly to schoolchildren. He grew raised in Seekonk, Massachusetts, and has seen some of Southern New England’s worst storms, including the 1978 Blizzard and Hurricanes Gloria and Bob! Mark enjoys presenting images of storms to schoolchildren and informing them about his experiences. Mark spends his free time riding his bicycle, running along the East Bay Bike Path, or doing yard chores.
