Darrin Rockcole is an American Meteorologist currently working for WILX-TV since joining the station in December of 1989. He currently works as a freelance meteorologist for the station. In June 2020, he retired from WILX News 10. He was the Chief Meteorologist during his time there. Rockcole is described by the station as “a vital feature of News 10 Today,” which airs weekdays from 4:30 to 7 am.
Rockcole formerly worked for a station that forecasted weather in the Flint and Saginaw areas before joining the WILX staff. When the station hired him, he planned to spend a few years and go on like so many others in his career, but he ended up staying after the area became a special place where people treated him like family.
Every day, Rockcole thanked viewers for letting him into their homes. “There aren’t many of us that get that chance,” he remarked. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and honor.” An ice storm that knocked out electricity to the station’s premises in the year 1997 was one of the highlights of his long career. Because the station couldn’t play advertisements, Rockcole and another reporter broadcast from a live television truck during commercial breaks. That was the “most strange day,” he said.
Throughout his career, Rockcole covered everything from the EF2 tornado that struck Williamston in the year 2007 that killed 2 individuals and demolishing a large number of homes, to Severe weather.
Technology developments, according to Rockcole, have also marked significant milestones in his career. He used to do weather with magnets when he worked in Flint, Michigan.
