Ripley graduated from Manchester High School and then attended the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. He graduated from the university with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. While at the university, he worked for Vox Magazine in Columbia, Missouri, and The Columbia Missourian as a photographer and reporter. It was in high school that Ripley developed an interest in journalism. While in high school, he worked for MHS-TV, his high school TV station as a News Director.

Ripley serves at CNN as a Senior International Correspondent based in Taipei, Taiwan. He has secured an exclusive interview with President Tsai Ing-wen. Also, he has covered the growing tensions between Beijing and the island. Ripley has also provided extensive coverage of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, where he secured an exclusive interview with Wickremesinghe (acting President) in the year 2022.

Before being based in Taipei, Ripley was based in Hong Kong, China. There he covered multiple major series such as the Tokyo Olympics, Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, the protests in Hong Kong, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Before Hong Kong, he was based in Tokyo where he covered the deadly floods in Joso;  the devastating eruption of Mt. Ontake; the execution of 2 Japanese ISIS hostages; and the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster. 

Ripley has over 2 decades of journalism experience. He has traveled to North Korea 19 times and with that, he is the first American television correspondent to do so. He has also provided an exclusive report from Pyongyang after nuclear tests and missile launches. Ripley was the only American journalist in North Korea when Otto Warmbier (a United States prisoner) was released a few days before his death in the year 2017.

Before Ripley joined CNN, he worked in newsrooms across the U.S. for about one and a half decades. He began his career as a student reporter in Connecticut. This was before going to work for KUSA-TV in Denver, Colorado; NewsChannel 5 – KRGV-TV in Texas. Ripley has interned at WTIC-TV in Hartford, Connecticut, and has worked as a freelancer at The Weather Channel where he did on-camera work. He has also worked in Missouri.
