Whitney Burney is an American Multimedia Journalist /Reporter/Anchor working for WXYZ News serving the station as a News Reporter since September 2022. Prior to this, she was working for WSET ABC 13 News where she was serving the station as a Multimedia Journalist since June 2017.

Burney attended Michigan State University where she studied between 2012 and 2017. There, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Political Science. While there, she was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Pretty Brown Girl.

Burney was born and raised in Grand Rapids and works for WXYZ/7 Action News serving the station as a News Reporter. She was previously working with the station serving as an intern back in the year 2016. She states that working in Detroit has become a full-circle moment.

Back in the year 2017, she started her career in Lynchburg, Virginia where she was serving as a Multimedia Journalist. While there, she covered a devastating tornado and the 2017 Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville which resulted in the death of one protester and two Virginia State Troopers. Through her work during the rally, she got helped to earn the station an Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast.

Back in the year 2019, she landed a reporter position at WOOD TV 8 in Grand Rapids. Whitney began as the lakeshore reporter covering devastating erosion which threatened homes along the lakeshore. In her time there, she covered racism in a local school district, an officer-involved shooting, and civil unrest in 2020. Asides from this, she helped to overhaul the station’s Black History Month Special uncovering unique history and perspectives.

Back in the year 2021, she began anchoring the Evening Weekend Newscasts and never lost her love for telling stories in her community. Her work as a reporter resulted in an award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for Best Reporter in Market 2 for 2021.

She states that the stories she enjoys telling the most are those which affect marginalized communities and looks forward to giving more Metro Detroiters the platform to tell their stories. She is a proud Michigan State Spartan and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Sorority Incorporated. During her weekends, she enjoys spending her time checking out new restaurants as she is an advent foodie.
