Barton began his career at Maidstone United in Kent, but he quickly transferred to Wimbledon, where he played defense and midfield in 180 appearances. Warren was a member of the English National Team while at Wimbledon, making his debut in the infamous 1995 friendly between England and the Republic of Ireland, which was called off after only 27 minutes. He also represented Sweden and Brazil at the international level.
Later, he joined Premier League club Newcastle United as a defender as part of manager Kevin Keegan’s elite group of players known as “The Entertainers.” Warren played 164 games for Newcastle, helping the club to second-place finishes in the Premiership in 1995-96 and 1996-97, as well as FA Cup final appearances in 1998 and 1999.
During the 2000-01 season, he was team captain and played in every major European cup competition, including the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League, in which Newcastle faced European heavyweights FC Barcelona. Barton played professionally until 2004 when he retired. He a well-known.
