An employee asked him to leave while he was chatting with his white wife and friends. The waitress assumed he was “selling something” because of his casual attire. The cafe owner fired the waitress, and Kamau Bell and the owner organized a forum to address bias issues. This incident was later featured on This American Life. After the 2018 Starbucks arrests, Kamau Bell criticized Elmwood Cafe again. The cafe closed but reopened a month later with a new name, Baker & Commons.
