Halas is the eldest child of Bears founder and owner George Halas, who left the team to his daughter upon his death in 1983, and Minnie Bushing Halas. She became the owner in the NFL and in all major league sports in the United States after the death of Ralph Wilson in March 2014, who was the owner of Buffalo Bills.
In addition, she serves as the secretary of the Bears franchise and is a member of the team’s board of directors. She is however empowered to vote for the shares of her children and grandchildren as well as her own. Together with other Halas heirs, they own 80% of the Bears. Furthermore, The Bears have been in the Halas-McCaskey family’s hands since George Halas acquired the then-Decatur Staleys from A. E. Staley and moved them to Chicago in 1921.
George Halas her father had intended that George Halas Jr his son would inherit the team, and passed the team presidency to him in 1963. However, George suddenly passed on in 1979 with a heart attack. Since there was no one else to inherit the team Virginia inherited the Bears when her father died four years later.
She inherited a Bears team that won Super Bowl XX two seasons after “Papa Bear’s” death. From 1984 to 1988, the team was part of a run of five consecutive NFC Central titles. In addition, she accepted the NFC Championship trophy on January 21, 2007, which bears her father’s name.
