Vargas serves as the NBC4 Bureau Chief responsible for gathering and covering the region’s major news stories on weekdays for the NBC4 News. She, who has been recognized for her versatility and journalistic integrity, has covered a variety of national and international stories while at NBC4, including the Republican National Convention and the release of American hostages in Iran. Her most notable local stories include being the first to report on and film the escape of three inmates from an Orange County maximum-security jail, the Christopher Dorner manhunt, the Seal Beach hair salon massacre, as well as the federal indictment of Orange County’s former Sheriff Mike Carona.

Vargas has also received numerous honors and awards for her professional accomplishments and community involvement throughout her career, including the Sky Dunlap Award, the Orange County Press Club’s highest honor for career achievement, and community service. She was also a member of the team that received a national award from the Society of Professional Journalists for online deadline reporting on the Cal State Fullerton lockdown in 2012.

Other honors include a Golden Mike, a State Bar Association Award for ‘Outstanding Reporting,’ an Orange County Press Club Award for ‘Best News Reporting,’ and she was a member of the team that won a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award for ‘Best Newscast’ in 2008. She also received the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, and Avance Award from the Hispanic Americans for Fairness in Media, and was named Latina of the Year by the National Latino Peace Officers Association in 2006.

Furthermore, Vargas was also honored by her alma mater, California State University, Fullerton, with the Vision & Visionaries Award, the school’s highest honor bestowed upon alumni. She is also committed to giving back to the community and is still involved with California State University, Fullerton. Vargas, in collaboration with the station, established the NBC4-Vikki Vargas Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Cal State Fullerton journalism student. Vargas was also awarded the General William Lyon Crystal Vision Philanthropy Award by the Orangewood Children’s Foundation for her work with foster youth in the region.
