Palka recently served at Fox 5 as an Evening Meteorologist. She retired from Fox 5 after a 36-year stint. She announced her retirement in January 2022 but did her last weather forecast on March 23. As a child growing up in Erie, Pa., her parents always took us to D.C. to meet her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Uh, area. When they told them that schools sometimes closed for as little as 2″ of snow, they got such a kick out of it from a snow belt town that averaged over 100′ a season.
They liked soaking in the history of the area. She wouldn’t have thought that someday she would get to predict the same school-closing 2 for you at 5, 6, 9, 10 & 11 pm in her wildest dreams. After a brief stay at WTVR in Richmond, she started her career at FOX 5 in 1985. Within the renowned Hurricane Hunter’s plane, she covered storms on the ground and from the air. She hunted tornadoes and observed the sun’s total eclipse in Curacao.
Now she can add to the list earthquakes, Derechos, and the polar vortex. There were countless live shots, including flying in a hot air balloon, paddle-boating in the Tidal Basin, the National Christmas Tree Presidential Illumination, and Halloween at her house for a few years when her girls were younger. Face to face, the best thing is always having to know their audiences.
She won six Emmy awards for weather forecasts along the way. Now that she’s been with FOX 5 for more than three decades, people tell her they grew up watching her. That’s the best reward of all and she is more than thankful. She enjoys taking in the lively theatre scene of the city, going to Nat’s tournaments, traveling, walking, hiking, and having a meal at one of the many great restaurants in this region while she’s not at FOX 5.
