As a student, Stewart majored in economics at the University of Vermont where he also worked as the station’s news director in his final year. Later, Stewart joined WQCR-FM (now WOKO) and WJOY-AM in South Burlington. Afterward, he went to Vermont’s leading radio stations, where he worked in the morning drive, anchoring 15 live daily newscasts.
After this, Stewart then worked at NBC5 covering City Hall in 1984, in the new Burlington bureau covering City Hall. He also worked in the Statehouse in Montpelier. In 1987, Stewart now became the Senior Reporter where he covered Vermont’s first murder trial accessible to cameras.
