Lavin has been involved with college athletics for over 30 years, previously serving as head coach at St. John’s and UCLA, as well as a broadcaster for ESPN and ABC. From 2010 to 2015, he guided St. John’s to 20 or more wins three times, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2015. While recovering from cancer treatment, he missed the 2011-12 season.

From 1996 to 2003, Lavin was the head coach at UCLA, where he led the Bruins to six seasons of 21 or more wins and six straight NCAA Tournament appearances. In six years, he led the team to five Regional Semifinals and signed two top-ranked recruiting classes.

Lavin guided teams to 10 postseason appearances, including eight NCAA Tournament berths, nine seasons of 20 or more wins, and a career record of 226-131 in 11 years as a head coach. Sixteen of his student-athletes were selected in the NBA draft. Between coaching stints at UCLA and St. John’s, Lavin worked for Disney Corporation as an ESPN/ABC college basketball and NBA Draft color analyst from 2003 to 2010.
