The show consists of a group of contestants known as Islanders who live in a villa in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Mallorca. These groups are cut off from the outside world and are constantly supervised.
In order for them to survive, they must form relationships with their fellow islander. At first, they pair up according to their first impressions which later changes as they are forced to repair at special ceremonies where they choose to remain with their current partner or switch partners. In their time at the villa, they must share a bed and are authorized to talk with their fellow islanders at any time. However, despite being cut off from the outside world, each Islander has a phone which they use to contact other Islanders through texting.
Asides from this, they receive messages that brief them on the most recent challenges, re-couplings, and dumplings. Alcohol consumption and communications with the outside world are, however, restricted. Asides from this, they play numerous games and challenges which test their mental and physical abilities.
In the show, the winners receive special prizes which include a special date or a night at the Hideaway. The Islanders are eligible for elimination and dumped for various reasons such as public voting via the Love Island mobile app and the incomplete single after a re-coupling.
In the finale of the show, an envelope ceremony occurs where the couple who had the highest number of notes from the public attain two envelopes, one for each partner.
