Roxana Saberi is an American journalist working as a CBS News correspondent based in London. She joined CBS News in January 2018. She is also a former Miss North Dakota pageant winner.

Previously, Saberi worked as a freelance reporter for CBS News and Newspath, CBS News’ partner news channel, from 2016 to 2018. She worked on CBSN, CBS News 24/7 digital live news network, as a fill-in anchor. Before joining CBS News, Saberi was a reporter for Al Jazeera America, where she covered breaking news, business, and investigation reports around the United States and abroad.

She documented child labor and Muslim-Buddhist tensions in Myanmar. In Japan, she hosted and reported on the 70th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, and the biracial presence in Japanese culture. In Al Jazeera America, Saberi has created social justice beats, focusing on gender issues, LGBTQ rights, and racial and ethnic minorities.

Saberi spent six years working and blogging in Iran. Fluent in Persia, she covered politics, foreign affairs, the nuclear program, the environment, culture, and the evolving status of women in Iran. While there, she opened and ran the Tehran office of Feature Story Journalism, contributing regular and in-depth news stories to media organizations including PBS, Fox News, Channel News Asia, NPR, PRI, and Deutsche Welle. She has worked as a freelance reporter for the BBC in Iran and filed radio stories for ABC.

In 2009, while writing a book on Iran, Saberi was detained and held in Tehran’s Evin Prison for 100 days on a bogus charge of CIA espionage. After an international petition for her release, she returned to the United States and wrote the book Between Two Worlds: My Life and Imprisonment in Iran. She continued to contribute stories on Iran and the Middle East and worked as a commentator for numerous news organizations in Iran.
