Mitchell is a meteorologist who can be seen on weekdays on NBC 5 First at Four, and also on NBC 5 News at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. He had also worked for other stations prior to joining NBC5. For instance, he was previously the chief meteorologist for KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK, since 1994.
While at KOCO-TV, Mitchell was responsible for providing coverage of some of the most severe storms including several tornado outbreaks, blizzards, flooding, and wildfires. Prior to that, Mitchell forecasted weather at WOI-TV in Des Moines, IA, and at AccuWeather based in State College, PA.
The Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters as well as the Associated Press recognized them for their severe weather forecasting experiences. His team of meteorologists at KOCO-TV was also recognized by the Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating, for their rare work covering the EF-5 tornado in May 1999 in Oklahoma City. Mitchell graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor of science degree in meteorology and has also received the CBM seal from the American Meteorological Society.
