Rick Henry is an American Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter working for WIS-TV serving as a Sports Director. He joined the station in 1988 as an anchor and reporter.
Rick Henry Education
In 1973, he graduate from McBee High School, the school’s first African-American Valedictorian, later Henry attended the University of South Carolina. He is a 1977 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism. In 1998, Rick was named to the University of South Carolina College of Journalism’s “Diamond Circle”, joining a national group of esteemed individuals chosen for outstanding contributions to their field. He was named an Outstanding Senior.
Rick Henry Career
Henry is an anchor and reporter at WIS-TV Columbia, SC serving as a Sports Director. He joined the station in 1988 as an anchor and reporter and later in 1996, he became the Sports Director. Henry began his journalism career in 1981 as a Sports Director at WPDE-TV in Florence, SC.
He became the first African-American to serve as Sports Director for a South Carolina Television station. During his time at WPDE, he did play-by-play for an ABC telecast of a college football game between Grambling and South Carolina State. He began his journalism career in Hartsville, SC at WHSC radio. While there, he did play-by-play for High School basketball and baseball games and was also a disc jockey. In 1999, he was named the Sportscaster of the year by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.
His Sportscast was selected as the best in South Carolina by the Associated Press in 2005. He has covered many sports events such as The 1996 Summer Olympics, The Ryder Cup, The Daytona 500, the NBA Playoffs, The Super Bowl as well as The Masters. In addition, he reported on The NCAA Basketball tournament and The World Series. He was voted the CETA Director for Chesterfield County, SC. CETA in 1980. The Comprehensive Employment Training Act trains workers and provides them with jobs in public service.

The organization was founded by USC baseball Coach Ray Tanner and his wife Karen who helps needy children. He also served on the 100 Years of Gamecock Basketball Committee. During the honoring event of USC basketball players and coaches which he helped in celebration plans, he served as a Master of Ceremonies.
