Phil Ferro Career
Ferro serves as the Chief Meteorologist of WSVN and is in charge of providing you with the most up-to-date weather information, from watches and warnings to your local forecast. He leads a four-person team that monitors the skies of South Florida 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can rely on Phil and his team to keep you up to date on any threats, especially during hurricane season.
Phil stays up to date on the latest developments in the meteorological field by regularly attending seminars and hurricane conferences and even flying with hurricane hunters. He took part in a historic mission that flew into a hurricane while traveling back across the Caribbean in 1999. Most tropical cyclones move west to east, but Hurricane Lenny did something unprecedented in the 113-year Atlantic tropical cyclone record. It was the first storm to have a long west-to-east track, and Phil was there to see it.
He has completed FEMA training on community hurricane preparedness and is constantly taking NOAA classes to keep his forecasting skills sharp. Phil joined 7News in 2005, guiding us through the most active hurricane season on record. Thirty-one systems formed in the tropics, with two of them directly affecting us, Katrina and Wilma.
He is a member of the AMS Commission of Professional Affairs’ standing panel of Spanish-language evaluators of the Board of Broadcast Meteorology. He also serves on the board of the NWA and has received professional development hours from the National Hurricane Center every year since 1995.
His work has been recognized by the South Florida chapter of the Association for Women in Communications, the Miami-Dade County League of Cities, and the City of Hialeah. He collaborates closely with the American Red Cross to spread the word about preparing for hurricane season. Phil’s weather forecasts can be heard on weeknights on 7 NEWS.
