Ferro serves as the Chief Meteorologist of WSVN and is in charge of providing you with the most up-to-date weather information, from watches and warnings to your local forecast. He leads a four-person team that monitors the skies of South Florida 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can rely on Phil and his team to keep you up to date on any threats, especially during hurricane season. Phil stays up to date on the latest developments in the meteorological field by regularly attending seminars, hurricane conferences, and even flying with hurricane hunters.
He took part in a historic mission that flew into a hurricane while traveling back across the Caribbean in 1999. Most tropical cyclones move west to east, but Hurricane Lenny did something unprecedented in the 113-year Atlantic tropical cyclone record. It was the first storm to have a long west-to-east track, and Phil was there to see it. He has completed FEMA training on community hurricane preparedness and is constantly taking NOAA classes to keep his forecasting skills sharp. Phil joined 7News in 2005, guiding us through the most active hurricane season on record. Thirty-one systems formed in the tropics, with two of them directly affecting us, Katrina and Wilma.
He is a member of the AMS commission of Professional Affairs’ standing panel of Spanish-language evaluators of the Board of Broadcast Meteorology. He also serves on the board of the NWA and has received professional development hours from the National Hurricane Center every year since 1995.
His work has been recognized by the South Florida chapter of the Association for Women in Communications, the Miami Dade County League of Cities, and the City of Hialeah. He collaborates closely with the American Red Cross to spread the word about preparing for hurricane season. Phil’s weather forecasts can be heard on weeknights on 7 NEWS. Phil has been covering weather and hurricanes in South Florida for over a decade. He began in 1995 as the lead forecaster at the local Telemundo affiliate, where he provided the most up-to-date storm information to South Florida’s Spanish-speaking community.
Phil is passionate about education. He is passionate about teaching weather to children and assisting teachers in passing on the wonders of science and meteorology to their students. Phil has previously received two Emmy nominations for Hurricane specials. He is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.

Ferro has been struggling with cancer since 2019 after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. This was right after his doctors came upon a tumor “the size of a marble” close to his vocal cords. He had to undergo throat surgery as well as 32 rounds of chemotherapy. After the treatment, he was announced cancer-free and continued working at WSVN for 6 months. After a while, he went to his normal monthly checkups and his doctors discovered that cancer had returned. He had started the monthly chemotherapy and surgeries.
Fortunately, he got better and was cancer-free. He resumed work and this time around for good. “A little apprehensive, but I’m looking forward to it. I don’t think I could watch another Netflix series again. I think I’ve seen them all,” he said in an interview.
