Van Sant serves at CBS as the “48 Hours” correspondent based in Atlanta. He’s a Seattle native. He graduated with a degree in communications from Washington State University in Pullman. Van Sant was transferred to the London branch (1989-91). He wrote thoroughly on the fall of the Soviet Union, for which he was awarded the Columbia University-Alfred I. DuPont’s Award. Van Sant has covered the first Gulf War, the reunification of Germany, starvation in Africa, and many other stories that carried him to Europe and the Middle East. He moved to New York, where he wrote for the CBS News magazines “Street Stories” (1991-93) and “America Tonight” (1994).

Van Sant was later transferred to the “CBS Evening News” (1995-97) where he won the Emmy Award for his story on the economic and social collapse in Albania. He also contributed to three prime-time specials, the ‘Smithsonian Wonderful Adventure,’ which featured updates on the research of lions in Africa that scientists believed would lead to AIDS cure, attempts to save cheetahs in Namibia, and the plague of brown tree snakes in Guam.
Van Sant was appointed the correspondent for “Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel” (1997-98). He was the first TV journalist to write on the catastrophic drought in North Korea, earning his third Emmy Award. His study on rape in the Balkans was the result of the American Women’s Radio and Television Award. Van Sant was also part of the undercover investigation team of CBS News, which discovered and reported an indicted war criminal in Bosnia. He received the Overseas Press Club Award for this article.
Van Sant was named the “48 Hours” correspondent in December 1998. His hour-long report on terrorists capturing and burning a school in Beslan, Russia, earned him both the fourth Emmy Award and the coveted Edward R. Murrow Award. The Beslan Study has received the Golden Word Prize, Russia’s most prestigious award.
Van Sant’s study on global trafficking in human beings received the 2005 Sigma Delta Chi Award. He has received the Overseas Press Club Prize for an Investigative Story on the Trafficking of Human Organs in Peru. He has received three Edward R. Murrow Awards for “48 Hours” interviews. Van Sant wrote about 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Virginia Tech shootings. Over the years, he interviewed a host of celebrities including Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Garth Brooks, Nick Nolte, LeAnn Womack, Ronnie Dunn, and Kix Brooks of the Brooks and Dunn country duo.
