In September 1994, he joined The University of Denver where he attained his Bachelor of Arts in Geography in June 1998. He, later on, joined Texas A&M University where he attained his Master’s in Meteorology in 2000.

Heggen serves as the Chief Meteorologist at KPIX5. Heggen has also managed to enclose several weather calamities including tornado outbreaks in the Southern Plains, blizzards in the Upper Midwest, and hurricanes along the Carolina coast. He has received many awards including 7 Emmy Awards, “Best Weather Anchor” and “Best Weathercast” awards from the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists.
Prior to joining KPIX5, he worked at WNCN where he served as the morning meteorologist from November 2017 to February 2020 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Before he joined WNCN, he worked at WSMV where he served as a morning meteorologist in Nashville, Tennessee for about 8 years. He had previously spent about 4 years and 4 months working at Daymar College in Nashville, Tennessee from June 2010 to September 2014.
Heggen had also spent about 4 years and 1 month working at Newport Television where he served as a meteorologist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From January 2005 to December 2005, he worked at West Virginia Media Holdings where he served as a meteorologist. Prior to his tenure at West Virginia Media Holdings, he worked at KBJR-TV where he served as the Chief Meteorologist from November 2000 to December 2004.
From June 2000 to November 2000, he worked at KBMT-TV where he also served as a meteorologist. Prior to that, he worked at Texas A&M University where he served as a research and teaching assistant. He had also spent some time serving as a GIS Analyst at the U.S. Geological Survey(USGS).
