Back in the year 2021, Merv Griffin requested whether Sajak would be interested in taking over as the host of Wheels of Fortune from Chuck Woolery. However, Fred Silverman, who was the president and CEO of NBC rejected his hiring stating that he was too local. Merv, in Sajak’s defense, stated that by imposing a moratorium on new tapings until Sajak got hired.  He has now been hosting the show for about 42 years.

This issue became moot when Silverman was dismissed due to repeated programming failures and replaced by Brandon Tartikoff. Previously, Sajak had hosted two game show pilots in the year 1980. These include Press Your Luck for Raph Edwards which has no relation to the 1983 CBS game show of the same name. He also hosted Puzzlers for Mark Goodson, before taking up the role of hosting Wheel of Fortune.

He also hosted both the daytime(NBC) and syndicated evening versions of Wheel between 1983 and 1989 and continues to host the latter version. Pat later returned for the 36th season between 2018 and 2019 before he became the longest-running host of any game show, surpassing Bob Barker, who was the host of The Price is Right between 1972 to 2007. Sajak was officially honored as a host for the Guinness World Records with the episode taped on the 28th of March 2019 and airing on the 8th of May 2019. Pat also had a small role as Buffalo, New York newscaster in the 1982 comedy film, Airplane II: The Sequel. During his late-night talk show on CBS, he premiered in the month of January 1989 and left the daytime version of Wheel and was replaced by former San Diego Chargers place-kicker Rolf Benirschke. Rolf was later replaced by Bob Goen when the daytime show moved to CBS in the month of July the same year.

He also appeared on Super Password a number of times between 1984 and 1989 and Password Plus in the year 1981 shortly before taking on hosting duties on Wheel.
