Battiste’s landmark inquiries into the 2018 Catholic Church sexual assault crisis have earned critical praise. Her initial interview on television first led to two church assault survivors sitting face-to-face with the priest, who claimed they were raped as infants. During a separate report of the CBS News Investigation Unit, Battiste and her staff discovered claims of sexual assault against a priest currently in active ministry in the archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, presided over by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

After Battiste asked DiNardo about the accusations, the priest was suspended from his ministry. Two months after Battiste’s exclusive interview with now-former Washington, D.C. Archibishop, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, in August 2018, he resigned. She also broke the news of nuns sexually assaulting minors, which resulted in more than 40 more people coming forward. In February 2019, Battiste flew to Rome to cover Pope Francis’ Vatican summit on the crisis of clergy rape.

Since joining CBS News, she has covered the gun issue in America and was the first to report on armed teachers in the classroom, which started a nationwide dialogue. She has covered and written numerous articles for the “CBS News Evening News” segment “Eye on America,” including a teacher strike in Sacramento and a discussion over arming college students on campus.

She also sat down with five sisters who had been sexually assaulted by the same priest for an “Eye on America” article. Her highlights included a look at ground-breaking brain science that could assist in the treatment of suicide and mental disorders, innovative food contamination technologies, and the wild horse epidemic in the American West.
