In 1976, he started working at a Madison-based private weather consulting firm, Weather Central. It is specialized in forecasts for power utilities, ski areas, agri-business, the Wisconsin TV Network, and over 40 TV and radio stations nationwide. In 1979, he was appointed Executive Vice President of Weather Central. He also supervised a staff of 14 meteorologists.
During his time in Madison, he partnered with Terry Kelly, a fellow meteorologist, in devising one of the first computer weather graphics systems for television. In 1982, brought the first weather computer to Colorado and trained legendary Denver weatherman Stormy Rottman on that system.
From 1985 to 1991, he worked at a local in St. Louis, Missouri as a Chief Meteorologist. In the course of his time there, he was approving candidates to receive the AMS Seal of Approval for Television Weather-casting, serving as a member of the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology. The Colorado Broadcasters Association recognized him as their “Citizen of the Year” for his volunteer work in Colorado schools in 2001.
