They released their first album in 1984 called “The Smiths” and their songs were based on the songwriting partnership of Marr and Morrissey.
Throughout the years that they were active, quite a number of their songs were in the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. In addition to that, all their albums were top five of the UK Albums Chart, including the 1985 Meat, Is Murder which was number one. Later on, in 1986, they released an album called The Queen Is Dead which was a huge success all across Europe and beyond.
In 1987, they released Strangeways, Here We Come which was also a blast. In 1987, the band officially broke and even followed with filing cases. Over the years, the band members publicized that they have no plans of reuniting mostly because of the tensions that are still existing amongst Joyce, Marr, and Morrissey.

After several court hearings, Joyce won the case and awarded damages of about £1 million from Marr and Morrissey.
