Mike DeForest Career
DeForest works for WKMG News serving the station as an Investigative Reporter. He joined the News 6 team as Florida officials began counting hanging chads in the aftermath of the 2000 presidential election. From then on, he covered some of the biggest news events in Central Florida from hurricanes to shuttle launches to the trials of Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman.
His grandfather introduced him to broadcasting by giving him a microphone and a tape recorder when he was just about five years old. Later on, Mike made a few rounds through the neighborhood in Chicago suburbs with his family’s bulky VHS camcorder, while shooting movies with his friends.
As for his education, he studied broadcast journalism at the University of Southern California. During his time in Los Angeles, he was mentored by some of the biggest names in television news. His first big assignment was covering the OJ Simpson case. During the weekends, he put his voice to work navigating tourists past animatronic hippos on the Disneyland Jungle Cruise.
DeForest started his career working at KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota which is also known as the birthplace of Spam. The highlight of the year for him was covering the annual Spam Jam festival. Previously, he also reported for WRCB-TV in Chattanooga, Tenn.
While there, he fell in love with the barbecue, the woman he’d later marry, and the mountains. However, what he loves most about his job is meeting the memorable people who make Central Florida one of the most interesting and exciting places in the country.
