Clay started his career in 1978 in a small radio station in Texas. During that time he was in his junior year in high school. He moved from radio to Television in 1985 and joined the weather team at KCEN-TV in Waco, Texas as a weather anchor.
The KXAN-TV, the NBC affiliate in Austin, Texas hired him in 1990 where he became a chief meteorologist. In addition, he worked in Tyler and San Antonio, Texas. He moved to the Great Northwest in 1995 where he covered earthquakes, snowstorms, and volcanoes for the weather department at Northwest Cable News in Seattle.
Clay assisted in launching Bay News 9 as the original meteorologist on Your Morning News in 1997. The Bay News 9 successfully forecasted Hurricane Charley on Aug. 13, 2004 morning, he recalls it as his most memorable moment at Bay News 9.
He attended Mississippi State University where he pursued his meteorology career. Clay also joined Central Texas College and earned his degree in telecommunications. In 1995, he received the AMS TV Seal of Approval award. Furthermore, he won the National Weather Association’s Radio and TV Seal of Approval. Clay and his colleague Brian McClure received the Associated Press award and Florida Suncoast Emmy for Best Weathercast for severe weather coverage.
