Konopasek anchors Daybreak on Sunday mornings beginning at 8 a.m., until 10 a.m. and provides updates on weekday afternoons and evenings. He is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who relocated to Denver in August 2016. Michael previously worked as a reporter for NBC affiliate KING-TV in Seattle and CBS affiliate KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City. Michael’s work as a journalist has influenced people’s lives. Following a delayed alert in 2017, his reporting in Colorado prompted state leaders to commit to a public dialogue on establishing best practices for AMBER Alerts. The Denver Police Department credited Michael with bringing the Safe Place program to their attention the same year.
His coverage of Seattle’s anti-hate crime initiative prompted Denver to implement a Safe Place program. He has covered national and international news, including his gavel-to-gavel coverage of Taylor Swift’s sex assault trial in 2017 and what was Washington state’s largest wildfire in 2014. During the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, Michael also worked as a TEGNA correspondent, reporting for television stations across the country. Michael was a part of the award-winning coverage of the 2014 Marysville Pilchuck High School shooting near Seattle, which earned him an Edward R. Murrow Award.
He reported live from the heart of the deadly Moore, Oklahoma tornado destruction path a year ago, moments after the EF5 twister devastated the area. In 2014, his coverage of the tragedy was recognized with a regional Emmy Award. Michael was nominated for a second Emmy in 2018 for his coverage of a deadly ambush on sheriff’s deputies in suburban Denver. Michael volunteers with Healthy Learning Paths, a nonprofit organization that provides affordable health education to children across Colorado, in his spare time. He hosts the organization’s annual “Race 4Kids’ Health” in Broomfield.
Michael is a former Chicago double-decker bus tour guide who is originally from the Northwest Indiana suburbs of Chicago. He is a Ball State University graduate. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in telecommunications and a minor in political science. Michael worked as an intern for the United States Congress and Chicago’s ABC-owned WLS-TV while at Ball State. He is passionate about cycling, history, politics, and travel. His travels have taken him to all 50 states and several countries, both for work and pleasure. Michael was awarded a journalism fellowship in 2018 that allowed him to report from the Korean Demilitarized Zone as part of international efforts to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons.
