Matt Zaffino Career
Zaffino serves at KGW-TV as a Chief Meteorologist. He began as the Weather Anchor at KGW. His’s passion for weather led him to pursue a career in television. His fascination with the weather stems from his desire to be outside and in nature. Even, in his German class in high school. His instructor drew weather charts on the chalkboard there, outlining the conditions needed to trigger a snowstorm and send everyone home for the day. Since then, he’s been making weather charts. Matt interned and then worked as a weather producer at KTVX in Salt Lake City while studying meteorology at the University of Utah. He moved to Traverse City, Michigan, in 1984 to forecast weather for WGTU, and then to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1985 to anchor the morning and evening weathercasts.
In 1985, he happily returned to the West to work as a weather anchor at KDRV in Medford, Oregon. In 1988, he was employed by KATU in Portland to do weekend weather. He also did environmental reporting for television news and honed his writing and story-telling skills. He was later moved to the evening newscasts after helping with the launch of KATU’s morning news. Matt left KATU in 1996 to join KGW as Chief Meteorologist. In 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2015, the Oregon Associated Press named him Best Weathercaster. Matt received Emmy Awards for outstanding individual achievement in weather casting in 2000, 2015, and 2016, and has been nominated for multiple other Emmys.
For 25+ years of exemplary work in broadcasting in the Northwest, he was inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle in 2016. He is the only person who has ever broadcast live from the summit of Mount Hood on television. Matt has covered the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, as well as the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics in Utah and Vancouver for KGW. He went to the Greenland Ice Sheet in the summer of 2004 to report on climate change studies, doing live radio broadcasts from the ice for KINK FM in Portland.
Matt created a Northwest Weather Calendar for many years, combining his love of outdoor photography with Northwest weather and landscapes. The Business Education Compact was one of the local charities that benefited from the proceeds. Over the years, he has made several school visits to teach Portland students about the science and beauty of the weather. Zaffino volunteers with the Oregon Humane Society, the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, Medical Teams International, and the American Cancer Society, among other organizations. He has served on the Oregon Chapter of the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society’s Board of Trustees.
