He went to Whitehall High School in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. He was a standout high school football player for Whitehall, which competed in the East Penn Conference. Penn State University recruited him out of Whitehall High School, and he went on to become an All-American defensive tackle for the Nittany Lions.

Millen serves as the lead game analyst for the Big Ten Network, working alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Kugler and reporter Lisa Byington. Millen, a four-year letterman at defensive tackle for Penn State from 1976 to 1979, was a member of Nittany Lions teams that went 37-11 overall, including back-to-back 11-1 seasons in 1977 and 1978.
He earned All-America honors for his performance in 1978 when he helped lead the program to a National Championship game appearance. Millen’s 22 sacks rank fifth all-time in school history and his 36 tackles for loss rank eighth.
Following his outstanding college career, Millen was selected in the second round of the 1980 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL with the Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins after switching to linebacker. Millen was a member of four Super Bowl championship teams, winning at least one with each of the three teams for which he played. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro in 1984 and 1985, was selected to the 1988 Pro Bowl, and retired after winning his fourth championship with the Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI in 1991.
Millen returned to broadcasting after retiring, first with CBS as an analyst for NFL game telecasts in 1992, then with FOX Sports for its presentation of the NFC package in 1994. He later worked as a color analyst on Westwood One radio for Monday Night Football games. When he accepted the position of team president for the Detroit Lions in 2001, he moved from the broadcast booth to the front office, a position he held from 2001 to 2008.

Matt Millen Amyloidosis|Matt’s Health/ Heart Transplant
Millen was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare disease, in 2017. In Millen’s case, the disease affected his heart, reducing it to about 30% capacity. Millen was told that he needed a heart transplant to live. While he waited for one, he began chemotherapy to treat his amyloidosis. On Christmas Eve 2018, the transplant surgery was performed at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey.
