Matt Makens is an American experienced atmospheric scientist, meteorologist, and the owner of Makens Weather. He previously served as a meteorologist for FOX31. He joined the station in October 2016 and left in May 2021.
Matt Makens Career
He went to The University of Kansas and graduated in 2002 with a degree in Atmospheric Science, which is essentially a combination of math and physics. Makens is the owner of Makens Weather. He previously served as a meteorologist at FOX31 on Channel 2, he grew up watching Blinky’s Fun Club, I Love Lucy, Happy Days, Leave It To Beaver, and The Andy Griffith Show. As a result, he has always been connected to the station in some way. Now I work as a meteorologist. He grew up outside of Castle Rock and attended Douglas County schools until 1998 when he graduated from DCS.
He attended the Stock Show. He competed in the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo every year, and Rosie was his favorite hog of all time. After graduating from college with a background in engineering rather than broadcasting, he found success with Sunflower Cable, KSNT-Topeka, KAKE-Wichita, WFTV-Orlando, and KMGh-Denver. All of this taught him valuable journalism lessons and expanded his weather experience.
The tornado that hit his apartment in 2003 was the most notable event in his career, followed by tracking one of the largest tornadoes ever recorded, the Greensburg tornado in 2007. Several Emmy awards, state, and AP honors, and, of course, memories and friendships have resulted from coverage along the way.

Matt Makens Family
His father was a local veterinarian, he has an older brother. On Saturdays, his father would take him to work with him, and then they would go to Caboose Hobbies; we had quite the railroad set up in our basement. His mother struggled to keep him inside because he was always out and about on our property. His fondest childhood memories are from Colorado. He first swam underwater at Glenwood Hot Springs, a popular weekend destination for the family.
