Makens served as an anchor at FOX31 on Channel 2, he grew up watching Blinky’s Fun Club, I Love Lucy, Happy Days, Leave It To Beaver, and The Andy Griffith Show. As a result, he has always been connected to the station in some way. Now I work as a meteorologist. He grew up outside of Castle Rock and attended Douglas County schools until 1998 when he graduated from DCS.
His fondest childhood memories are from Colorado. He first swam underwater at Glenwood Hot Springs, a popular weekend destination for the family. Year after year, he attended the Stock Show. He competed in the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo every year, and Rosie was his favorite hog of all time.
On Saturdays, his father would take him to work with him, and then they would go to Caboose Hobbies; we had quite the railroad set up in our basement. His mother struggled to keep him inside because he was always out and about on our property.
In some ways, he can’t stay inside for too long – he needs to be outside. When he went to The University of Kansas, he realized how much he loved nature and the weather. He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Atmospheric Science, which is essentially a combination of math and physics.
His interest in weather grew almost immediately as he was able to visualize and comprehend the science and process of what Mother Nature tries to accomplish. Although we can’t fully predict what she’s up to and are unlikely to ever achieve more than a 95 percent accuracy rating, we are becoming much more accurate year after year as technology advances.

Plus, he has a “leg-up” on Colorado weather because he grew up watching it and the strange things it can do. His first unintentional tornado chase occurred near Calhan after leaving the livestock auction with his older brother. He was eight years old at the time.

From tropical storms in Florida to snowstorms, he was given the wonderful opportunity to return home; he had tried numerous times since 2002, but 2010 was the year of his homecoming. He can’t imagine living anywhere else – this is where he belongs. And he felt at ease on Colorado’s Own.

The tumult in the weather departments at KDVR and sister station KWGN continues: Longtime Denver weatherman and Colorado native Matt Makens is leaving Channel 2 in a few weeks.
Makens, who is an atmospheric scientist as well, has been in his current role since June 2016. Just Thursday, he was named Westword’s “Best Local TV Weathercaster” for 2021.“This is bittersweet as I’ll be leaving Ch 2 in a few weeks,” he said about the award on Twitter. “However, this is a great way to ‘head out to another pasture.’ “
