Prior to joining WSET-TV, he worked at WTEV-WAWS where he served as an anchor as well as a reporter from August 2007 to August 2014. He had previously spent about 7 years working at WTLV where he served as an anchor and reporter from 2000 to 2007. He went to Cleveland State University where he attained his Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies.
Spain has also won several awards and honors including the 2018 Virginia Associated Press award and a Second Place Award for Best Investigative Reporting. He has also received several Emmy Awards, Society of Professional Journalism awards, and Associated Press. Spain also won quite a number of regional Edward R. Murrow awards and the 2019 Virginia Associated Press awards. After enclosing the Charlottesville riot, he received a regional Edward R. Murrow award in April 2018.
