Mullen serves as an anchor on the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm newscasts with Catherine Garcia and Monica Dean. He has always held a special place in Mark’s heart. “San Diego has always been a remarkable city. As a journalist, he witnesses many of the nation’s most serious problems firsthand. Prior to anchoring the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts with Catherine Garcia and Monica Dean, Mullen was the Chief Asia correspondent for NBC News in Beijing, where he regularly reported on notable Asian and Chinese current events, including in-depth coverage of The Olympics, for NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, MSNBC, and CNBC. Mullen became the first journalist to broadcast a live report from Tiananmen Square in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics after the Chinese government cracked down on student protesters in 1989.

Mullen’s assignments have included reporting from war zones over the years. He was honored in Iraq for his account of the Kurds’ first vote in that country’s historic election. Mark has also covered stories in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, such as Hurricane Katrina, the aftermath of 9/11, and the California wildfires. The vast majority of Mark’s stories as an NBC domestic correspondent took place in Southern California, with many of them taking place in San Diego. Mullen worked at ABC News in New York before joining NBC, where he anchored World News Now, America This Morning, and was a correspondent for ABC’s World News Tonight and Good Morning America.

Mark’s professional career began in 1987, following his graduation from Loyola University of the South. His first assignment took him to WLOX-TV in Mississippi. Later in his career, he worked in newsrooms at KDFW-TV in Dallas, KRON-TV in San Francisco, and KING-TV in Seattle. Mark has received numerous national and regional awards for his work as an anchor and reporter, including a National Emmy Award for Outstanding News Coverage. He was also named Outstanding Young Journalist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists.
