Giangreco earned a B.A. in Communications from the University of Dayton in 1974. He serves as a radio contributor for ESPN. He formerly worked for WLS-TV in Chicago, Illinois where he served as the sports director and lead sports anchor. He also anchored/reported sports for the Number One rated 5 PM and 10 PM newscasts. Prior to joining ABC 7, Giangreco worked at Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, where he was the station’s sports director, sports anchor/reporter from 1983 to 1994, and weekend anchor/reporter from 1982 to 1983.
Before that, he worked at WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was a sports anchor and sports director (1978-82). Prior to that, Giangreco served as a weekend sports anchor and reporter at WDTN-TV in Dayton, Ohio from 1976 to 1977. His broadcasting career began in 1972 during his college years when he joined WING-AM radio in Dayton as a news and sports reporter.
Throughout his career, Giangreco has been honored with five Emmys, the prestigious Iris Award from the National Association of Television Program Executives, two Associated Press Awards for “Best Sportscast,” and two Peter Lisagor Awards. Currently, he serves as honorary chairman of the Ronald McDonald House fundraising efforts.
In 1996, he was named “Father of the Year” by the Chicago Father’s Day Council, and in 1995, he won the Dante Award from the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans and the Justinian Society of Italian Lawyers Award for journalism. Come 1982, he received the Louisville Journalism Award for his excellence in sports reporting. In 2017, he was honored with the Illinois Sportscaster of the Year Award.
