Over the years with NBC 4, he has reported on numerous unforgettable stories in the Tri-State area. When he joined NBC 4, it wasn’t long before he became among the 1st reporters on the scene at the Empire State Building shooting. He covered Hurricane Sandy from Staten Island when it hit the Tri-State later. His team’s car fell underwater during the tragedy and after losing the car, he together with his team found themselves under the care of a friendly family to ride out the storm.
In the year 2020, his role in NBC4’s COVID-19 coverage was integral. The coverage won the station the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award in January 2021 for providing a full-circle view in real time of the pandemic, with thorough coverage of the virus’s explosion in the city of New York. He has traveled to report on significant stories outside of the Tri-State market. He reported on the tragic movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado in the year 2012. Santia traveled to Las Vegas in the year 2017 to provide coverage of the fatal concert shooting outside the Mandalay Bay casino. In the following year, he traveled to North Carolina to cover the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, embedding with the NYPD and chronicling their frequent swift water rescues for Tri-State viewers.
Santia holds a New York Emmy®Award which he received in the year 2016 for the story, “Walking Again, For the First Time,” which chronicles one man’s fight to walk again. After 2 years, he received another 2 New York Emmys®Awards for his investigative coverage. The investigative stories included “The Gold Bucket Bandit,” where he tracked an apparent gold heist thief to Ecuador and took viewers on an unforgettable journey across the accused deed; and “Hijacking Hollywood,” where he had a look at multiple thefts that brought impact on film production companies on location in New York City. The reports later on obtained national and international attention.
Before Santia joined NBC 4, he worked for WDIV-TV in Detroit, Michigan as an intern before making his way up to investigative reporter. He spent over one and a half decades there. While there, he won an Emmy Award for journalistic excellence. He reported on the trial, arrest, investigation, and sentencing of Kwame Kilpatrick (former Detroit Mayor). Also, Santa reported on the visit of Terry Jones (Koran-burning pastor) to Dearborn, Michigan. His reporting on the infamous Bob Bashara murder case in Michigan was spotlighted by CNBC’s “Deadly Rich” series, in the year 2018.
