Major Garrett Career

Garrett serves at CBS as CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent. He as well hosts “The Takeout,” a weekly multi-platform interview show on politics, policy, and pop culture available on CBSN, top radio stations across the country, and all podcast platforms. 

Garrett was attending James Madison High School in San Diego, California. He graduated with a Bachelor in Journalism and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Missouri in 1984. He is a member of Phi Gamma Delta.

Garrett is a White House & Congressional Correspondent to CBS from the National Journal. Garrett used to work at Fox News, where he was Chief White House Correspondent. In his eight years at Fox News, Garrett has covered Congress, two presidential elections, the war in Iraq, and several other topics of national interest. White House officials describe him as one of the hardest-working West Wing writers, someone they can trust to get it right.

Prior to joining Fox News, Garrett was a White House reporter for CNN, reporting on Presidents Bush and Clinton. Previously, he was a senior editor and U.S. Congressional reporter. News and World Report, where he commented on Congress and the prosecution of President Clinton. He was a Legislative correspondent for The Washington Times from 1990 to 1995 and a Deputy National Editor of the newspaper from 1995 to 1997.

Earlier in his career, Garrett was a writer for The Houston Post, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the Amarillo Globe-News. Garrett has since published three novels. His third novel, The Lasting Revolution (2005), was recently named one of the best non-fiction political books of all time by Chris Cillizza’s Washington Post “The Fix” blog.
