Holt serves at NBC News as a news anchor for the weekday edition of NBC Nightly News and Dateline NBC. Following the demotion of Brian Williams on June 18, 2015, Holt was named the permanent anchor of NBC Nightly News. Holt followed in the footsteps of Max Robinson, an ABC News evening co-anchor, and became the first African-American to anchor a weekday network nightly newscast on his own.
Holt worked for CBS for 19 years as a reporter, anchor, and international correspondent. He was hired as a reporter for WCBS-TV in New York City in 1981. In 1982, he joined KNXT in Los Angeles as a reporter and weekend anchor, and the following year, he returned to WCBS-TV as a reporter and weekend anchor. Holt moved to WBBM-TV in Chicago in 1986, where he anchored the evening news for 14 years. He not only worked as an anchor, but also reported extensively from conflict zones around the world, including Iraq, Northern Ireland, Somalia, El Salvador, and Haiti.
Holt joined MSNBC in the year 2000. In 2003, he began working full-time for NBC News, where he became a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News and Today. Holt joined Weekend Today as a full-time co-anchor after the death of previous co-anchor David Bloom. He also hosted a two-hour daily newscast on MSNBC until late 2005. Holt was named weekend anchor of NBC Nightly News on May 9, 2007, and anchored the show for eight years before replacing Brian Williams as permanent anchor of the weekday edition. Holt is also the current host of NBC’s Dateline. He moderated the presidential debates in the year 2016, and in 2017, he interviewed President Donald Trump, according to fellow journalists.
