Cowan serves at CBS as a national correspondent and substitutes anchor for CBS Sunday Morning. His reporting also appears on all CBS News broadcasts and platforms. Cowan has interviewed a number of news and television figures including First Lady Michelle Obama, music star Bruno Mars, comedy great Carol Burnett, and tennis legend Billie Jean King. Cowan spent more than two decades of his almost 30-year career at CBS News, covering two eras. CBS covered the September 11 terrorist attacks; the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2006 Beirut crisis, and the 2006 Indonesia tsunami.
As a national reporter for NBC News, where he worked on “NBC Nightly News,” “Today” and MSNBC, Cowan was assigned to cover the campaign and inauguration of President Barack Obama; the 2011 tsunami in Japan, the Libyan crisis, and the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
Previously, Cowan served as a reporter for CBS Newspath, CBS News’ 24-hour news channel, and was a producer for CBS News’ “CBS News Nightwatch” and then “CBS Evening News” in Washington, D.C. His broadcasting career began with local journalism, working as an anchor and reporter for WLWT-TV in Cincinnati.
Previously, he was an anchor and correspondent for WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo, Mich., and a weekend anchor for KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, Calif. Before joining KCOY-TV, Cowan held jobs as news chief and anchor of the NBC affiliate KIEM-TV Eureka, Calif.
