Porter serves at KGW-TV as the weeknight anchor and co-anchor of the KGW News at 11 and hosts KGW’s current affairs show “Straight Talk” on Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Laural graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She was named Outstanding Graduate of the UCSB Communication Department. Laural was named Best Host/Moderator of Straight Talk at the 2015 Northwest Regional Emmy Awards. Exclusive interviews with former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, who was under fire for the collapsed Cover Oregon health insurance exchange and controversy surrounding his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes, were included in her winning submission.
Laural and Kurt Austin, a photojournalist, both received the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting in 2015. Jeff Daly’s quest for his long-lost sister, Molly, who had been institutionalized in the 1950s, was featured in their award-winning novel. Over the course of a decade, Porter and Austin’s reporting chronicled Jeff and Molly’s reconciliation and, eventually, their last emotional goodbye. In 2011, Laural received the prestigious national Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting.
She was honored by the Mental Health Association with a prestigious award for her coverage of mental health problems. She has won six Emmy awards in the northwest region, as well as a Western regional Associated Press award for feature reporting in 2012. She’s earned several awards from the Society of Professional Journalism, the Associated Press, and the Oregon Association of Broadcasters, as well as numerous awards while reporting and anchoring in Idaho. In February 2015, she was invited to interview President Obama at the White House on trade matters, which was one of the highlights of her career.
She was the first Oregon anchor, and one of only four in the country, to meet with President Obama and members of his Cabinet before reporting live from the White House. Laural was invited to lead an interfaith panel discussion at the University of Portland in 2013 with His Holiness, The Dalai Lama. She was given a traditional Tibetan Khata, a token of reverence and gratitude, by His Holiness.
Laural has completed the Portland Marathon many times and is a Boston Marathon qualifier. She has also participated in marathons as part of the Leukemia Society’s “Crew in Training” program. Laural served as an honorary co-chair for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events in Portland and Vancouver. She is now volunteering with the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund to assist children who have been orphaned as a result of the civil war in Uganda. She worked at KTVB (NBC) in Boise, Idaho, KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, California, and WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida as an anchor and reporter. Her mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, and her stepmother died of the disease.
