When Kristin was about five days old, she was adopted by Jerry Morris Chenoweth and Junie Smith Chenoweth. Both of them were chemical engineers from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a suburb of Tulsa, and named Kristi Dawn Chenoweth. Kristin stated that she is of one-quarter Cherokee ancestry. She also stated that she eventually met her biological mother. At her age, she used to perform gospel songs for local churches.

Chenoweth attended Broken Arrow Senior High School where she was participating in school plays. She went on to join Oklahoma City University where she was a proud member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. There, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Theatre in the year 1990. Later on, in the year 1992, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Opera Perfomance. Then, she was studying under voice instructor and mentor, Florence Birdwell.

Just two weeks before school began, she went to New York City in order to help a friend move.
