Kris Ketz is an American Emmy Award-winning News Anchor/Reporter currently working for KMBC 9 News since joining the station on 4th July 1983. He began working as the co-anchor of the weekday newscasts at 5 pm on KMBC 9 News, then in October 2007, on KMBC 9 First News. From May 2015 up to date, he has been co-anchoring the 6, 9, and 10 pm newscasts, every weekday.
Ketz is a proud alumnus of St. Ambrose University – Davenport, Iowa. He started his career in broadcasting when he was 18 years old. He started as a weekend news anchor for WQUA, a Moline, Illinois-based radio station. Ketz rose through the ranks to become the station’s news director after working as a morning and afternoon news anchor.
He debuted on television with WQAD-TV, after spending 4 years at WQUA. At WQAD, he progressed from producing and co-anchoring the weekend newscasts to co-anchoring the weekday newscasts.
Ketz is a proud nominee of a Regional Emmy Award, which he received in 2011 for “general assignment reporting” for a touching story about a heart transplant recipient meeting the donor’s family for the first time. Also, he is a nominee of an Emmy Award, which he received in 2003 for being the best anchor. In February 2015, Ketz was selected as one of four local television news anchors to get into a one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama.
For being the best anchor in the year 2008, he was honored with a Midwest Emmy Award. In 1991, he was also awarded for an in-depth investigation on the Ku Klux Klan’s impact in the Kansas City area. In a reader survey conducted by Kansas City Magazine in 2003 and 2001, he was voted “Best Reporter.” In addition, Ketz was honored by Hope House in 2004 with the Barbara Potts award. This was for promoting community awareness about domestic violence in Kansas City.
Ketz is affiliated with the Hispanic Media Association of Greater Kansas City. Also, Through his participation in the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, he engaged in raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Additionally, he has co-hosted local MDA telethons in the Quad Cities and Kansas City since the year 1980.
