He is a Rhode Island School of Design graduate with a talent for drawing. He also knows a lot about comic books and first appears in the season 2 episode “The Hofstadter Isotope.”
He also serves as a competition for the main characters, dating Penny and Amy (respectively) to help move their respective relationships forward. Stuart begins bonding with his similarly lonely counterpart Raj at the start of Season 6 when Howard has gone to space. He frequently seeks Sheldon’s and his group’s approval.
His actor, Kevin Sussman, was added to the main cast in season 6 with his credit at the beginning of the episode when he was present; however, he was demoted back to recurring status in “The Tangible Affection Proof” (S06E16), but had it restored at the start of season 8 in “The Locomotion Interruption.”
Stuart has appeared in more episodes than Mrs. Wolowitz and is second only to series regular Amy as of September 2015. He’s helpful and kind-hearted, but due to his overworked schedule and low-paying job as a comic book store owner, he doesn’t get out much and frequently becomes depressed and struggles with financial and health issues.

Despite the fact that Sussman is listed as a regular cast member in the first season credits, his character has not appeared in the series since the fifteenth episode. Walter’s character is analogous to Betty’s equally unattractive friend, Nicolas Mora.
