Ken MacLeod Career
MacLeod serves at WBZ as a general assignment reporter and anchor. Prior to joining the Boston station, MacLeod worked for three years at WKMG-TV (CBS) in Orlando, where he co-anchored the station’s morning show and the top-rated noon news. MacLeod previously worked in Atlanta, Georgia, as a co-anchor and reporter for the #1 ranked noon news at WAGA-TV (CBS/FOX). He was also a news anchor and temporary co-host of the station’s most-watched morning show, “Good Day Atlanta.” From 1990 to 1996, MacLeod served as a general assignment reporter for the station.
MacLeod’s lengthy news resume also includes stints at Atlanta’s WXIA-TV (NBC) and Lexington, Kentucky’s WLEX-TV (NBC). He has won several awards throughout his broadcasting career. His career in broadcast journalism started at Boston University, where he majored in broadcast and film rather than journalism. MacLeod was also interested in youth sports, competing in school soccer, junior varsity hockey, and club baseball. His love for sports ultimately led him to change professions to broadcast journalism, hoping that it would allow him to remain involved in sports for the rest of his life.
He sent a portfolio tape to various stations, unsure of his chances of becoming a sportscaster due to his youthful look, and ended up getting an offer to work as a general assignment reporter for a station in Lexington, Ky. MacLeod embraced and relocated to the south, a significant shift for someone who grew up outside of New York City and attended Boston University. Even more nerve-wracking, he said, was finding from station higher-ups that he was their last choice for the job but the only one who accepted it. Despite this, he had a wonderful time there. Many of the station’s workers, including him, were young, and there was in a hurry to learn as much as possible while still making decisions.
For over 30 years, MacLeod has worked as a reporter and anchor. He says his favorite stories are “heartbreaking stories about people, particularly kids, with good or bad outcomes.” For his work, MacLeod has won around a dozen awards. He has a stack of letters from people he’s met, thanking him for taking the time to learn about their lives rather than just doing his work. MacLeod advises young reporters to gain as much experience as possible and to stop serving as a station’s courier. He assumes that having real-world experience at a small station is superior to doing unrelated work at a larger station.
