Smith attended Morehouse College where he studied between 1990 and 1991. Being a native of Philadelphia, he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Policy after studying there between 1991 and 1994.

Prior to joining the WXYZ News, he made several other stops in the Midwest which include CLTV and WGN News in Chicago, and WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois. Keenan’s first TV job was at WGAL, the dominant NBC Affiliate in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He started out as an intern and a few months later went on to become an anchor who works overnight.
Later on, he left Lancaster and took a job “behind the scenes” with NBC News in New York City, where he worked for Dateline NBC and NBC’s New York News Bureau. He also returned to on-camera work at WZBN in Trenton, New Jersey, and Raleigh, North Carolina.
