Meyer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, United States to her loving and caring parents whose names are not available to the public. Her father joined the military before she was born. He was among the soldiers who fought in World War II. After his return, she stated that her father sexually abused her and in turn affected her teenage years.
During a sermon, Meyer described the many opportunities and tactics her father would use while growing up to abuse her. These include when her mother went shopping or when he made her swim. His father joined the military before she was born.
Previously, she has stated in interviews that he began sexually abusing her upon his return and discusses this experience in her meetings. To date, she speaks with a working-class St. Louis accent. She also revealed that her father had also abused other girls.

Meyer was previously married to her husband whose name are not known to the public. They tied the knot shortly after her senior year of high school. The marriage lasted for about five years and maintains that her husband frequently cheated on her and persuaded her to steal payroll checks from her employer. The duo would use the money to go on vacation in California. Meyer, however, revealed that years later, she returned the money.
Later on, after her divorce, she frequented bars before meeting her current husband. She is married to her husband, Dave Meyer who happens to be an engineering draftsman. The duo tied the knot on the 7th of January 1967. The duo are proud parents to their four grown children and live outside St. Louis, Missouri.

Asides from this, she reports during an intense prayer while driving to work one morning in 19976 that she heard God call her name. Meyer attended O’Fallon Technical High School in St. Louis, where she obtained her high school diploma.
She was born-again at the age of nine years old, but unfortunately, unhappiness drove her deeper into her faith. Meyer got home later on that day from a beauty appointment “full of liquid love” and was “drunk with the Spirit of God” that night while she was at the local bowling alley.
Joyce states that she didn’t have the knowledge and did not go to church when she was young. Asides from this, she had a lot of problems and needed somebody to kind of help her along. She also states that she thinks sometimes even people who want to serve God have got so many problems that they don’t think right. Asides from this, they don’t act right and they didn’t behave right. Furthermore, she states that they almost need somebody to take them by the hand and help lead them through the early years.
Joyce was briefly a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in St. Lois, a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. She began leading an early-morning Bible class at a local cafeteria. She went on to become active in Life Christian Center, a charismatic church in Fenton. Having a few years, she was the church’s associate pastor. This church became one of the leading charismatic churches in the area, largely because of her popularity as a Bible teacher. Asides from this, she began airing a daily 15-minute radio broadcast on a St. Louis radio station.
Back in the year 1985, he resigned as associate pastor and founded her own ministry, initially called “Life in the Word.” Later on, she began airing her radio show on six other stations from Chicago to Kansas City. Back in the year 1993, her husband suggested starting a television ministry. Previously, she was on superstition WGN-TV in Chicago and Black Entertainment Television(BET). Her program is now titled Enjoying Everyday Life and is still on air today.
Back in the year 2002, that mainstream publisher Hachette Book Group paid Meyer over $10 million for the rights to her backlist catalog of independently released books. Back in the year 2004, the St. Louis Christian television station, KNLC, operated by the Rev. Larry Rice of New Life Evalengistic Center, dropped Meyer’s programming.
In accordance to Rice, a longstanding Meyer supporter, Meyer’s “excessive lifestyle” and her teachings “often going beyond Scripture” were the impetus for canceling the program. Back in the year 2005, Time Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America” ranked Meyer as 17th.
