He started his career job in Albany, New York at WNYT. Linker points a pair of hurricanes hit his hometown on New York’s Long Island during his childhood and helped shape his future profession.
Hurricane Gloria’s impact in 1985, left his family without power for 10 days. In 1991, hurricane Bob passed to the east of Long Island on its way to landfall in New England and brought plenty of wind and rain to the island.
Linker left WNYT in May 1998 heading to Cedar Rapids, IA at KGAN for a new challenge forecasting the weather in the volatile conditions of Tornado Alley. He encountered 14 separate tornadoes while working on a story about storm chasers. Two of them were ranked F3 or higher.
