Becker serves at WBIR as the weekday’s anchor at 5, 6, and 10News Nightbeat. Returning to the Gulf Coast after joining WBIR-TV in the summer of 2006, where he reported in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and field anchoring coverage on the one-year anniversary, was one of his first jobs.

Five nightly newscasts: 4, 5, 6, 6:30, and 11 p.m. are among John’s daily anchoring and editorial responsibilities. Inside Tennessee, a half-hour weekly program is likewise produced and moderated by John. He founded the award-winning Service & Sacrifice business in 2008, which focuses on the lives and hardships faced by military veterans. In 2017, he directed and produced the documentary Facing Ghosts Return to Vietnam, which he also reported on. The hour-long documentary follows two dozen veterans on a ten-day tour.

The Adjutant General’s Distinguished Patriot Medal was presented to John by the Tennessee National Guard in 2017. John was also named an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Vietnam Veterans of America in 2017. In 2016, John earned an Edward R. Murrow Award for his Service & Sacrifice series, as well as a Distinguished Citizen Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

For developing and reporting the Return to Normandy coverage and half-hour special, John received an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2015. John also won an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2014 for his Service & Sacrifice series, which he produced and reported. The same series won two Murrows and a Society of Professional Journalists award in 2010. The East Tennessee Military Affairs Council presented John with the “Civilian Warrior” Award in November of 2010. John has also won awards for his anchoring and reporting on “breaking news” and “in-depth specials.” In 2004, John won an Emmy for a half-hour documentary he created and reported about his embed with Army National Guard troops in Iraq. The Associated Press awarded top awards for news writing to a story in the special. A long-form story on a boy who lost his arm in a farming accident won multiple awards, including a Murrow and a Best in the West medallion for quality in journalism. John went to The Poynter Institute, which is a prestigious institution for working journalists. In 2000, he received the Tom McCall Award for newsroom leadership from his peers.
