Avlon first graduated from an independent preparatory school, Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts in the year 1991. When Avlon was in his 20s, he worked as a chief speechwriter to Rudy Giuliani (New York City Mayor). Avlon wrote an essay on the attacks, “The Resilient City,” and his essay concluded the anthology “Empire City: New York through the Centuries.” Also, the essay was named, “the single best essay written in the wake of 9/11.” Avlon has appeared on The Daily Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In the year 2012, Avlon won the National Society of Newspaper Columnists award. This was for being the best online columnist.
