Kernen also spent some time working as a Cancer researcher at the MIT Center during his graduate studies. During his tenure there, he focused on mouse erythroleukemia cells which was later followed by a series of publications in scientific journals including Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology, Developmental Biology, and CELL.
