Joe Birch is an American news anchor/reporter working for WMC-TV (NBC-Affiliate) in Memphis, Tennessee. He joined the station in May of 1978.
Joe Birch Career
Birch serves at WMC Action News 5 as an anchor at WMC Action News 5 at 5, 6, and 10 p.m. from Monday through Friday. He marked his 40th year of service to WMC Action News 5 and its viewers in the year 2018. On the day he graduated from Christian Brothers University, he accepted an opportunity to work for Tennessee’s first television station. Joe has spent his entire career serving WMC fans.
Joe was named to the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2009, the Emmy Award-winning news anchor was inducted into the Silver Circle of the Mid-South Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Joe has traveled for WMC all over the United States and the world. In 1986, he spent three weeks in the People’s Republic of China to cover a visit by representatives of the Memphis In May International Festival, which recognized China in 1987.
In 1992, the journalist was dispatched to Italy to film a documentary about the Vatican Museums’ Memphis-bound Wonders cultural series show. He met Pope John Paul II during his assignment and filmed their conversation for transmission on WMC Action News 5. “The people of Memphis extend you their warmest greetings,” Joe informed the Holy Father. “God-a-bless-Tennessee,” the Pontiff said in a Polish accent. Joe later spent 25 days in Atlanta, covering the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games for Memphis and the Mid-South.
Birch has received various honors for his charity and civic contributions. Joe was awarded by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in December 2016 for his 15-year participation in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend. Joe was honored by the Memphis Gridiron Show, Inc. as “Newsmaker of the Year,” an honor he values because it was previously bestowed on his hero, the late comedian Danny Thomas. For nearly 20 years, he delivered MIFA Meals on Wheels (Route #12) once a week. Rosa Wright, who was 105 years old at the time, enlisted the help of Joe and others to rebuild her decaying home.
Joe is the co-founder and long-time race director of the Orion 5K Run-Walk, which benefits St. Patrick Community Outreach, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit that assists children and families in Memphis’ poorest zip code, 38126. In 2007, the Memphis and Shelby County Optimist Respect for Law Committee honored him Citizen of the Year for his Taking Back Our Neighborhoods reporting and other community-building efforts. Joe emcees Alzheimer’s Association events on a regular basis, including the annual Memory Walk.
