Spencer serves as the senior weathercaster at KXAN News working part-time. On joining the station in 1990, he started off by serving as the morning newscast. He, later on, started as a chief weathercaster and as the evening weather broadcaster in 1993 until his semi-retirement on March 1, 2021.
Spencer started his career working at East Central University based in Ada Oklahoma. In August 1981, he joined KADA Radio where he served as a DJ and News Director based in Ada, Oklahoma till his departure in October 1983. He then joined KTEN-TV where he served as the chief weathercaster till October 1990.
Spencer has also received a ton of awards since he started his career. For instance, he received the National Weather Association’s Weathercaster of the Year award. He is also the recipient of three Emmys and several Emmy nominations. He also received five Texas Associated Press Best Weathercast awards and was tagged Best Weather Reporter in the Austin American Statesman’s Best of the Best Awards.
Spencer is also active when it comes to helping out in his community and is part of several organizations and foundations all across the world. For instance, he is part of the Community Advisory Board for Austin Wildlife Rescue and is on the board of directors of Service Dogs, Inc. In addition to that, he is also on the Community Advisory Board and is also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
